The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) The HPT consists of identifying a series of driving clips on a computer as early as possible. You must react as early as possible to the actual or potential danger. The earlier you see the danger, the higher your score will be. To pass the HPT, you must score a minimum of 44 marks out of 75. Theory test The theory test is based on the Highway Code, To pass the Theory test, you have to correctly answer 35 questions on the touch screen computer. To pass it, you must score a minimum of 30 questions. These range from various motoring questions, from various categories, such as: road signs; simple first aid; road procedures and of course various driving situations. Study materials There are various official books published by the DSA and others, which will help you to pass and I have test sheets and CD-ROMS to enable you to study. You can also practice the theory test at various online sites including the Driving Standards Agency web site (they are responsible for organising the driving and theory tests). Booking your tests You can book a theory test by post, by phone on: 0870 0101372 or you can book it or online. When booking your theory test, you will need your driving licence number (which can be found on either your photo card or paper licence), your credit/debit card details. The cost of the HPT/Theory test is £21.50. A pen and paper is always handy to note down the information. However you will be sent a confirmation letter. There are various theory test centres around the country. If you live in North Kent, you would use either Sidcup or Gillingham. Make sure you are ready for the test otherwise you might waste your money!
